The Avenues Hotels?

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

in a press conference a couple of days ago, mohammad abdulaziz al shaya revealed that the avenues wishes to add to the mall a health care center or a hotel – however alshaya was quick to clarify that these ideas are still being evaluated and that no permits have been filed for that matter.

alshaya also revealed that phase 4 & 5 are still under planning, the latter phase will probably be home for a number of luxurious hotels – as for phase 6 it will develop the landscaping around the avenues mall, which by then will turn into one of the biggest malls in the world with a wide range of services & amenities under one roof.

Is Abou El Sid coming to Kuwait? I so wish..

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

when we were in cairo, abou el sid was our best egyptian restaurant, bar none - it offered the best falafel or to3miya, foul and the most delicious local egyptian dishes like mouloukhiya and my all time favorite the awesome circassian chicken...

the food is only half the experience, what strikes you most at abou el sid is the interior design that is so amazingly done! you walk into the restaurant and as the old classical egyptian songs play in the background, you are suddenly transported into the past, onto an old egyptian movie set...

the good news is that abou el sid might be coming to town - a friend of mine told me the other day that the sultan people are probably bringing the franchise to kuwait, not sure how and when but if this is true... guys this is awesome news!!! i am anxiously awaiting abou el sid, i so miss my circassian... and mouloukhiya...and to3miya... and tagen bil bamia... and foul bil tahina... and and and...

Beirut City Mall imitation-mob, irritating or amusing?

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

nice idea from a young activist group called "brand protection group" - they gathered on march 15th, which is the anti-counterfeit day, in city mall beirut to create awareness about imitated-fake products and brands, which can be harmful and dangerous to lebanese consumers - they basically wandered the mall imitating people to irritate them, a simple reminder that counterfeit products are not cool.

but from what i see, these guys are entertaining the audience rather than irritating them, so did the audience really get it??

Central Maternity Mart? Speechless!!

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

today in alqabas daily page 23 - hilarious and frustrating at the same time... whenever i run into a wrong sign, i get extremely depressed as it reminds me that i'm living in a third world continent - i see these wrong signs in lebanon, egypt and kuwait spreading like cancer.. someone has to fix this issue for good - how about creating a division in one of the ministries that is solely dedicated to translating and proofreading signs.. the image of the country & the region is at stake here and all it needs is a few employees to solve this "continental challenge"..

New and improved shopping 2011

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

kuwait’s old port used to be called alforda - located west of seif palace and north of the traders mart, one of the oldest warehousing and distribution hubs of old kuwait.

goods used to arrive from the old port to the traders' warehouses, then transported by horses to smaller retailers and sold to consumers - in the middle of the 17th century the port turned into a success story and by 1765 kuwait port had 800 ships transporting goods between basra and the arabian gulf.

hundreds of years later and the concept is still the same - goods arrive to the port by sea, air etc.. they go through the same logistics process, warehousing then distribution to retailers and finally they're sold to the consumers' descendants.

now of course the ships have changed, the ports logistics and retailers, but the process remains the same - people say that technology will soon change it all - today you can order online and receive your goods in a matter of hours – true, but what's new? the goods still have to travel from somewhere, reach a port, then go through the same logistics procedures until they reach you, they only now skip the local retailer, occasionally.

so nothing really new.. the day we are able to attach a physical product to an email and send it over electronically would be the day human race would witness a real revolution and a tangible breakthrough… until then enjoy the new and improved shopping 2011, just like your same old same old new detergent!

The meaning of broken glass for River Island

Monday, March 28th, 2011

a friend sent me river island's broken glass picture yesterday, so i wondered what it could mean and googled "the meaning of broken glass" - here are the answers:

  • to break uncolored glass in any form but that of a mirror or a bottle is a fortunate omen; but if the glass is red, future trouble and anxiety are implied - if green glass is broken, bitter disappointment will be your lot.
  • breaking a drinking glass is only bad luck when proposing a toast.
  • breaking a mirror is seven years of bad luck.
  • breaking a glass bottle foretells misfortune.

so there's nothing to worry about for river island, it's nothing but a fortunate omen.

thanks for the picture moe!

Why Earth Hour works for Explorers Base?

Monday, March 28th, 2011

explorers base celebrated earth hour yesterday at tilal complex - a great idea that works perfectly for the brand as it offers outdoor gear like tents, sleeping bags and various accessories for camping - why does it work? explorers base is for people who love outdoor activities and practice outdoor sports which enables them to interact with nature - hence giving back to nature from a brand that actually works in nature is a perfect fit.

a few ideas for the future, may be explorers base can build on this ad-hoc initiative and take it even further, by offering earth-friendly and recycled products fighting for earth conservation becoming an environmental champion, giving tips on how you as a citizen and how the government for that matter can improve the life of mother nature in kuwait.

while browsing explorers base's facebook page, i came across this awesome hunting archery! i don't know how it works, but it's a fantastic piece of art! anyways, well done explorers base, keep it up!

Shabestan, fantastic Iranian restaurant at 360 mall

Sunday, March 27th, 2011

a shabestan or shabistan is an underground space that can be usually found in traditional architecture of mosques, houses, and schools in ancient persia - in kuwait, shabestan is an iranian restaurant under the crowne plaza chain of restaurants that include sakura, ayam zaman, alnawkhaza etc..

though shabestan at 360 mall has a totally different look and feel than the one at crowne plaza hotel, the interior decoration is fantastic - the attention to details is impressive, you sit there and can't help contemplating the color world, textures, fabrics, tiling, furniture, cutlery... everything looks beautiful - the purple curtains hanging down the ceiling are absolutely gorgeous, they act as tables separators and give the restaurant a magical feel...

though we're not big fans of iranian food, we thought it was delicious - the appetizers were good, the kashk bademjan was actually excellent (fried aubergines with dried yogurt, dried mint and labnah) but the nargesi was simply ok (fresh spinach sautéed with a hint of garlic and kashk) - the salads were good especially the meygo salad, (shrimp and avocado salad with cocktail sauce)

as for the main course we have to point that the portions are filling, you better share the food otherwise you'll end up with leftovers - ghelo kabab & sultani was succulent, that's kabab and meat steak with rice, so was the ghelo kabab & kubideh - we didn't like the stew, we tried potato stew or gheimeh sibzamini and that was not what we expected - not that it wasn't good, but we didn't like the taste - service was great, no complaints.

the only thing missing was the caviar, we wanted to get that iranian caviar but the price did not encourage... kd 50 for 50 grams!! well, maybe another time and especially not with pepsi!!

final verdict: a strong recommendation for shabestan, however watch out for what you order - it is a bit expensive but worth the experience and by the way, they have delivery service!

Gender segregation in Kuwait malls?

Saturday, March 26th, 2011

meet the first exclusive “female market” in kuwait at abou halifa’s kuwait magic – according to alqabas arabic daily, march 27 page 54, the female market extends over 15,000 square meters and forbids men and children above 10 years old to enter the premises – moreover, all staff and personnel working at the mall are going to be females – what has always made kuwait unique is that fine balance between conservatism and modern living, like half way between ksa and dubai - red flag guys!! is the country turning into yet another ksa??

on the other hand, if a man walks into the mall in spite, would he be thrown into jail? what does the law say? i'll be interested to know, any lawyers out there?

Awesome rackets!

Scary afternoon in Kuwait!

Friday, March 25th, 2011

a dust-storm has hit kuwait this afternoon - what is scary is the speed at which it reached the city, without any warning! be careful guys, stay wherever you are as visibility on the road is very poor - stay safe.

a friend sent me the below picture from the avenues - the dust has entirely invaded the mall!

Cool sandals to usher in DKNY’s opening reception

Friday, March 25th, 2011

location.. location.. location..

instead of opening a stand alone boutique, dkny went for this small corner inside the ecco shoes shop, right under the main sign! though both brands are represented by the same agent in kuwait, ecco and dkny are completely different and independent brands... having them both under one roof is completely wrong.

oh and check this lovely sandals banner! dkny women are up to a cool reception at the opening's reception!!
