Nanny escapes fire leaving behind two children suffocating to death

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

you must have read the sad news about the two children who suffocated to death as a result of a fire that broke out in a house in the area of al-firdous on friday - what was really sad about this story is the fact that their heartless nanny escaped the house and left them behind to die - the two kuwaiti children (two and five years old) tried in vain to escape death by climbing to the upper floor.

in her statement, the nanny said that the kids were playing with electric powers which eventually triggered the fire in the ground floor while she was calling her sponsor on the first floor - when she went down she didn't see the kids, so she fled the scene.

i guess a parent would never leave his kids behind in a fire, but a nanny would - this should be a reminder for all parents to really think twice before they decide to hire a nanny - if both parents have a job and a nanny is absolutely necessary, make sure she is up to the responsibility and call your kids every now & then to check on them.

ideally, it is best to live without a nanny, if we can do without one why can’t you?

PQ reopens at The Avenues as Le Pain Quotidien

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

"PQ", formally known as "le pain quotidian" reopened yesterday at the avenues next to "brasserie de l’étoile" - the place looks nice with an indoor seating area and an outside terrace, it also has a dedicated space for selling all kinds of stuff like coffee or dried apricots.

the only thing that bothers me is the brand name - when the restaurant first opened in kuwait it used the name “le pain quotidian”, then for some reason it switched to “PQ”, apparently the latter is easier to pronounce by kuwaitis than the original french name - now the restaurant is back to the original french name and frankly, someone should make up his mind on what to call that restaurant once and for all!

Marina food court restaurants closing down

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

a couple of restaurants recently closed down their marina mall food court outlets, namely meias & fatouch - both restaurants had average food quality to say the least so is it that or is it because of poor traffic? i guess we'll have to wait and see how quickly these outlets will be rented out, then we can formulate a better opinion - meanwhile, i hope taco bell joins the marina food court, hey there's plenty of space available..

A tribute to Dutch women

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

in amsterdam, the first thing that catches your attention is the number of bicycles in town - the space dedicated for bikers on sidewalks is actually much larger than the space dedicated for pedestrians - but what is amazing is the number of women carrying their children on their bikes - sometimes it's not just one or 2 kids, i actually spotted a few women carrying 3 children on their bike in addition to grocery bags!

i immediately thought of "some" women in our region and how pampered they are - most of them have one or 2 or 3 nannies in addition to fancy cars - would they ever be able to make it on their own like the dutch? some of them might, but i am sure a lot won't for a salient of reasons.

i salute dutch women, way to go girls!

The Dutch reaping the rewards of legalizing hash

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

we were having dinner with a group of dutch near the famous red district area and apparently that area was a disaster a few years ago - it was dirty and heavily frequented by drug dealers and addicts, you would find piles of needles on the streets and it was dangerous for tourist to walk by.

after legalizing hash, this area became drastically safer as drug dealers disappeared as they went out of business and drug addicts were more and more reliant on legal weed rather than other dangerous drugs and suddenly the whole area boomed - not only that, the rate of crime went down drastically along with the rate of theft!

smart move by the dutch, i hope other countries follow suit!

Awesome Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

if you happen to be in amsterdam, you must visit the van gogh museum – though it is under renovation, if you love the artist like i do you have to pass by - queuing was 10 minutes long but that was just fine, but the way the paintings were displayed was amazing, especially the section that exhibits the new discoveries like hidden images under some exiting paintings as the artist used to recycle canvases to save money – obviously, painters at that time were extremely poor and couldn’t afford new canvases each time they started a project.

what’s also nice, is the preloaded electronic gizmos that give you prerecorded explanations on the paintings – i never knew that van gogh painted his bedroom with the simplicity of japanese art, i.e. no reflections or shadows.

do visit the museum next time you’re in town, you won’t regret it.

Meet the Lloyd, an ex-prison hotel!

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

staying at the lloyd hotel Amsterdam for a couple of days - it is the first ‘one to five star’ hotel of the world situated in a revamped 1920s building and apparently it is a showcase of dutch design - the rooms differ in size and design, but the high quality service is the same for everybody.

lloyd used to be a prison from 1940 to 1989 - the germans converted the building into a prison in 1941 and the name ‘lloyd hotel’ therefore would get a gruesome meaning during wartime - in 1964 the building was turned into a detention center for juveniles!

you can feel the prison like effect in the corridors but the design is so wicked like this closet with a red tea-cup logo on its door, apparently it's a free coffee and tea station for the second floor level - my room is very strange, 70's style and the bathroom has no door! - a different experience for those who want to try something new - if you ever visit amsterdam, i’d recommend you stay there, it is quite interesting to discover what kind of room you will actually get!

Scary Amsterdam stairs

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

while in amsterdam, i’ve visited a friend of mine who just moved to a new apartment with the steepest stairs i’ve ever seen in my life! they’re so scary you can’t go up or down without making a prayer – if you blink, you risk falling all the way down and kill yourself! Beautiful apartment though...

Ghotra hygene

Monday, July 25th, 2011

a few days ago, i took a cab from the airport and as we were cruising down the 5th ring road, the driver who obviously had a cold, started sneezing heavily using his ghotra as tissue substitute! how disgusting is that? that's like having hanging germs on your face and around your head all day long!

the best solution for cab drivers to avoid colds is to STOP directing the AC straight to their faces, especially when they get in & out of their cars several times a day - that's not healthy guys!

Winehouse’s website mourns her death

Sunday, July 24th, 2011

a touchy way to mourn the loss of amy winehouse - i tried to visit her website but it shows a black screen with a black & white picture of hers, quite sad actually - no news yet on the cause of her demise, but a post mortem is expected to be carried out next week, to determine the cause of death.

celebrities and fans have lined up to pay tribute to the singer after she was found dead at her home in camden, north london yesterday.

winehouse battled drink and drug problems throughout her career and news of her death was quickly followed by suggestions that it could be related to one or the other - what a loss to all r&b, jazz & soul music fans! god bless her soul.
