Double jeopardy!

Tuesday, July 31st, 2012

there's so much going on with kuwait airways i decided to create a new category called kuwait airways saga, similar to wataniya airways' saga - but this one will sure live longer...

the latest is an article i read yesterday in alqabas involving the airline's building in kuwait city alhilali street, which is running the danger of collapse! it seems that the authorities have warned the airline of the risks they're facing by staying in that building and asked them to evacuate, but kuwait airways is simply not listening!

the municipality was asked to take action and demolish the building, but no news on what's next! so basically, it's not only dangerous to fly the national carrier, but visiting their premises might be as risky! what an adventure at every single touch point with the airline!

Major summer ordeal!

Monday, July 30th, 2012

as every summer, some people traveling to lebanon ship their cars by land through syria - this year, they have been encouraged to do the same via a wicked strategy: ship your car in a fridge, thieves won't see it!

armed with a strong strategy, 3 friends of mine decided to ship their cars in spite - elie g, rami z, and imad s, took a calculated risk but soon after the cars were shipped, the guys were hit by a shocking news, the cars were stolen in syria!

at first, the thieves asked for 8 kalashnikovs in return for every car, then they escalated their demands asking for thousands of kds in cash - i've been following up the news with one of my friends who owned the stolen cadillac and it seems that the guy who was negotiating with them died in the raging war in syria - then this video appeared on youtube showing his car parked in the middle of a highway between daraa and damascus, used by the opposition forces as the video explains.

the total stolen cars from kuwait has now risen to 27 - a word of advice, do not ship your car to lebanon via syria, it will only make it to youtube!

thanks for the video andre.

Meet new Kuwait Music

Monday, July 30th, 2012

the first time we came across kuwait music, it was back in december 2010, we had just started our blog - from the moment we laid our eyes on the blog (back then) we immediately knew it will be a hit and added it on our blog's favorites - what attracted us to km back then still stands true today, a combination of superior creativity in terms of look & feel, and a superior content, which makes the experience quite unique.

today km has evolved into something much bigger than a blog, it is the champion of the music world in kuwait - this of course means much more than a blog, it talks to the music community through various topics that interest them: registering a band, gettig to know the music fans or other artists, classes lessons, knowledge base center etc... km also talks to music lovers in general and offers world music news, arabic music news, western music, middle eastern music, musical instruments.. etc..

km is also an engaging platform where you can interact in different ways, be it by commenting on blog posts or by writing your own music articles - simply follow the guidelines and submit your work, you might become a regular writer and have your own voice on the website.

scene is an awesome event search engine on kuwait music, basically it is a self-service portal where you can submit your event with map viewing, image gallery, google cal sync, yahoo and outlook, social media sharing tolls, etc...

scene is truly amazing, however we have a couple of minor comments - once you're on scene, you can't find a kuwait music home button, we've spent some time before figuring out - the km link is at the bottom of the page in gray-on-black small font phrase that says "scene is owned by kuwait music" - our second comment is a bit esthetic, "total events" is hard to read, may be a different color would contrast better.

the new km is simply amazing, it is easier to navigate and the overall experience has been greatly enhanced - it also felt the website is much faster than before - for more on the people behind kuwait music you can read their recent arabtimes interview here.

good luck guys, we're as confident of your potential as ever!

No food? cook the wife!

Sunday, July 29th, 2012

i read this strange story on arabtimes about a husband who burned his wife over food - according to security sources the guy lost his temper when he did not find his favorite dish on the table! he argued with his wife then threw at her a pot of boiling water causing second degree burns on her body.

what kind of animal is he? she didn't serve him his favorite dish so he attempts to cook her instead? amazing what people can do over food, reminds me of orson wellles' famous quote "ask not what you can do for your country - ask what’s for lunch.”

Cool idea from NBK!

Friday, July 27th, 2012

i passed by sultan center yesterday and as i reached the cashier, i spotted this custom-made "next customer" promotion bar by nbk - awesome idea and a great trigger at the point of purchase - basically the bar informs you that you can win your purchases (up to kd 200) if you use your credit card.

i asked the lady at the cashier if this is working, and she informed me that nbk customers are actually using their cards and that the promotion bar is doing its job - i believe this is a great idea for small budget campaigns, instead of spending a lot of money in the newspapers you can reach the customers at the relevant moment of truth.

you can read more about the nbk promotion here.

Conflicting Wataniya Airways settlements news

Thursday, July 26th, 2012

well, to start with, there was an ad in the papers this week calling for an assembly general meeting on august 8th, on the agenda the future of the company - though i am sure nothing will come out of this agm, i read on the wataniya airways' staff facebook page that one of the captains received a court order in his favor - salma dabdoub in the above snapshot is the lawyer's secretary where a group of ex-wataniya staff have filed a suit against the airline.

this attorney has informed some of his clients that he has single-handily refused a 40% settlement by the airline, whereas another group received a more generous offer of 50% settlement - this guy on facebook is saying that this offer has been communicated via email by wataniya airways.

very fishy news from both groups, not sure what is happening here - the first group is also complaining from their lawyer saying he should have consulted them before refusing the 40% settlement.

nevertheless, this seems to be approaching a closure, i guess we'll get more news around october.

Zafran, good even on full stomach

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

we got invited to zafran (indian restaurant) a couple of days ago to try their ramadan buffet, so i had to fill for my wife - but here's the dilemma, i had an aftar at 6:45 and at the same time i was also invited for a late lunch around 5:00 pm and couldn't decline - so i finished lunch around 5:30 & headed to zafran, you can imagine the situation here... going for iftar on full stomach is not a good idea!

anyways, i got there on time and was really surprised by the place, the interior is really amazing, especially the wall tiling - though i love indian cuisine, i couldn't eat much, but i managed to grab a piece from selected dishes, whatever i picked was very good, i really wished i didn't have lunch before, the food was mouth watering..

i had ashari murgh tikka, kashmiri seekh kabab & some other stuff, i also managed to have some carrot & rice pudding, they were really awesome, except for that cardamom in my rice pudding, i hate cardamom.

the only thing that bothered me is the smell of the place, it is very strong! i wish they can find a ventilation solution as the smell sticks to your clothes.

other than that, i will sure be back with the family as soon as they come back - if the food is so good on full stomach, then it must be awesome on an empty one.

thanks for the invite stacey, it was worth it.

Shawarma’s top 10 best practices tips

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

along with hot dogs, shawarma is one of my all time favorite sandwiches! i love shawarma so much i developed best practices or call them tips, so i can enjoy shawarma every time, all the time - if you stick to those tips, your shawarma eating success factors will be greatly enhanced! so here are my top 10 tips:

1- never order shawarma out - by the time the food reaches your home, the tahina will be all dry, the meat will cool down and the bread will deteriorate absorbing the tahina sauce along with the meat & tomato juices

2- as a result of tip number one, always eat your shawarma sandwiches at the restaurant where it is freshly served

3- make sure you are not the first customer at that restaurant, or you will end up eating cold pre-cooked/overcooked meat and dull veggies - most probably you will end up with severe food poisoning

4- check the meat spit (the rod that holds the meat), if the chef is shaving a pre-cooked side, you will end up eating overcooked crispy meat, make sure the first layer of meat is shaved off and served to someone else

5- be patient, wait until the fresh side of the spit is well cooked and ask to be served from that meat

6- freshly cooked meat is always great, however it can be a bit dry - better mix the meat with the fat dripping off that spit (let's put cholesterol on the side for a moment please)

7- keep your eyes closely on the chef as he mixes the meat, some chefs tend to mix pre-cooked meat with freshly shaved ones - ask the chef to load your sandwich with freshly shaved meat only

8- ask for the bread to be heated, just a little bit - let the chef lay the sandwich on the grill for a few seconds, it makes a huge difference

9- finally, eat the sandwich while standing up, bend forward as shawarma sandwiches get messy and dripping over your clothes is most likely to happen - don't be shy, bend forward and dive into that sandwich with full confidence

10- avoid late night shawarma sandwiches, they are quite heavy on the stomach - always eat shawarma as early as possible in the evening

that's my top 10 tips for shawarma best practices - so far my best shawarma place is fayrouz express, salmiya - though the quality has gone down drastically, it is still my favorite place.

Free app with weeverapps.com

Monday, July 23rd, 2012

i came across this awesome website that basically lets you build your own iphone, ipad, android, and blackberry app real easy! it is amazing and simple, just go to weeverapps.com, click on pricing.

when you get to the pricing page, you will see 3 options, start with the first one and sign up for free - once you do that, an identification key appears at the bottom of the page, copy it as you will need for wordpress activation.

next, you need to download the weever app plugin and activate it, quite a simple task.

once you have activated the plugin, you need to insert your identification key so you can edit it - editing the app is easy, you need a few trial and error tests to figure it out, it is not complicated, once you're done, you can scan the bar code and see how your app looks like, then make the amends before you go live.

this is the look and feel of our app, basically i have added a blog tab, a video tab for our youtube channel, and a social tab for twitter.

i have also added facebook photo feed to photos, as for the share app tab, it basically allows you to share a post and most importantly download the app icon to your iphone screen, it doesn't show on this snapshot because it was taken post download.

weeverapp is really awesome, the only downside is the absence of comments on blog posts, that's why we basically turned it off until they add this function, but if you can do without comments, this would be perfect for you.

Censorship cuts lead role out from an entire movie!

Sunday, July 22nd, 2012

i received this story from nader which i would like to share:

i decided to go to the cinema with my friends, although some were against the idea because of the censorship, however we all agreed to give it a shot since the movie we picked to watch was for a change, an arabic one - after all arabic movies are conservative & self-censored so we weren't expecting much to be cut

here's what happened - we booked a movie called "helm aziz" starring 2 main egyptian actors "ahmed ezz" and "shereef mounir" but throughout the whole movie we didn't even see shereef mounir!! supposedly every time ahmed ezz goes to sleeps, his father (shereef mounir) visits him in his dreams and makes pranks on him, but every time we reach to that part, the scene is cut until ahmed ezz wakes up! so basically, we haven't seen shereef mounir in the whole movie, who is what the movie is all about!!

we didn't understand anything because the movie was about what is happening in the dreams - it ended in like 1 hour and 20 minutes and lately all egyptian movies are within 2 hours so we are looking into 40 minutes of censorship!! SO WHY SHOW THE MOVIE IN THE FIRST PLACE?? we got really frustrated and decided not to watch movies in kuwait again..

same thing had happened when i watched pirates of the caribbean part 4 where they removed the mermaid scenes which were also important, but at least that might be a bit justifiable because of the partial nudity, however this is an arabic movie.. what's wrong with the dreams scenes??

all i can think of right now is why don't cinescape mention on every movie poster the amount of minutes removed from the movie, and it's up to the us to watch the movie or not, because seriously such decisions really ruined our night..

thanks for the story nader, i guess mentioning censorship time on movie posters is a great idea, but cinescape will never agree to it as this will discourage a lot of people from watching certain movies.
