Meet Koshari Goha

koshari-goha

the first time i had koshari was back in 2003 when we were in egypt - i kind of disliked it in the begining, but then it grew on me, then i fell in love with it - when we came back to kuwait in 2004, i was told about this place called koshari goha which everyone praised, however i never had the chance to try it - on the other hand, i did try koshari gad, the food was ok but still nothing like egypt.

this friday, i was home alone and very hungry, so i decided to try goha (yeah, 8 years later..) - so i went to hawalli, near sultan center and looked up the place which wasn't hard to locate - basically the place only sells koshari, no falafel or foul, just koshari..

i ordered the food, however i did one big mistake by pouring a large quantity of red spicy sauce, miscalculating the concentration of chilli pepper... it was unbelievably spicy and i fumed like an old locomotive!

the price? 500 fils for the small portion (big enough for an adult) and 150 fils for a can of pepsi! that's it.. nevertheless, you kind of need another 20 kd for various refreshments necessary to put down the fire in your throat!

goha's koshari is very similar to gad, a bit better though but not as good as the traditional egyptian meal - if you like koshari, i would recommend you visit this place, mind you it is very popular, like 1 star or less :)

Where are you heading this summer?

ladera-resort-st-lucia

ladera-st-lucia-resort-2

no, this is not where we are heading, but a wishful thinking... one of the dream places we'd like to visit one day, beside bora bora, is st lucia and to be specific, ladera resort - it is heaven on earth! taking full advantage of its natural surroundings, the place has 32 suites all with an "open wall", the west side of each unit is left open to expose the breathtaking view, and the orientation of the buildings maintains complete privacy.

so if you have a few bucks to spend and you plan to go somewhere truly unique this summer, st lucia in the caribbean islands is the place to be - as far as we are concerned, we're going to canada and france, a bit boring when compared to the above!

Unexpected 6:38 am call!

alghanim-garage

the glove compartment in my car broke down so i went to alghanim garage to fix it - the parts were not available and i had to leave my vehicle there for a couple of days until it was ready for check-out - the problem was fixed and the next day, i got a call from alghanim garage at 6:38 am while i was driving down to work - frankly i was a bit shocked to hear from dani at this hour, i mean why would you assume that people are awake at this very early hour!?

anyways, dani had a valid reason - apparently they had found 3.5 kd in my car and want me to go back to collect it! i couldn't believe my ears!! a garage, populated with a large number of labor force has found 3.5 kd in a customer's car and is now returning it?!

wow! i was impressed! this has never happened to me before! though it happened with my dad in canada back in the 90's - when the government gave him the passport, it came with a plastic bag containing 1 canadian dollar, because the official who took the passport's fee a few days before did not have change on him!

way to go alghanim garage, that's how you build customer loyalty.

The most anticipated Ramadan TV program

Thursday, April 25th, 2013

Alrai1

i was invited to alrai's ramadan grid launch dinner at the regency hotel where a number of media people, clients and tv stars gathered for the occasion - the set was quite nice, the lighting beautifully done, but definitely not the food!

Alrai2

the excitement in the hall was quite high as 2 of the major kuwaiti stars were present, hayat alfahed and suad abdallah - it seems that the 2 stars were on bad terms until recently and this is the first time in years that they collaborate together in a big production.

the ramadan series they're in is a drama/comedy called "el beit beit abouna", or the house is our dad's - the story is about two divorced women trying hard to resolve their children problems which proves to be an insurmountable challenge - i am not into arabic series, so i'm sure i won't be watching, but if this is of interest to you this program is set to be a smashing hit at alrai tv this ramadan.

Organica out, Smashburger in

smashburger

remember this place next to our building called organica that used to serve pasta in one corner and fish n chips in another? well for some reason it has closed down - however, the good news is smashburger will be replacing that fish n chip restaurant and i'm so excited as this whole stretch of restaurants from mou2men, to subway and round the corner towards pizza romana has basically no burger joints - actually, salem al mubarak street and specifically the stretch from auk to ras salmiya has no burger joints.

i'm sure this one will be a smashing hit, looking forward to the opening.

Killing pride!

begging-child

i read this sad story on arabtimes online about this poor girl who got beaten and tortured physically & mentally by her dad and brother for refusing to beg.

of course the beating caused injuries all over her body, but what i want to stop at is her moral injury - did her dad & brother realize what they have done? they just killed a woman's pride and self-esteem - god forbids, if one day she turns into a prostitute, it will be because of her dad & brother, they just planted the wrong seed in an innocent and proud soul.

killing a human's pride is as bad as killing a soul, these guys should be punished and thrown in jail.

Meet Un Chien Andalou

un-chien-andalou

my son was telling me the other day that it has been a while since we posted about movies - so while i was telling him about this lovely movie called midnight in paris, and how owen wilson goes back in time to meet picasso, dali and luis buñuel, he mentioned an old movie that i had seen in university called "un chien andalou", written by salvador dali & buñuel and directed by the latter.

i downloaded the movie and watched it once again, it is a 17 minutes surrealistic silent movie with scenes that may or may not have a link or mean anything - the movie starts with this bizarre scene of a straight razor placed on a woman's eye, a small cloud formation obscures the moon, a cow's eye is slit open - there's also this other weird scene of a woman poking at a chopped hand in the street with her cane - then a man drags two grand pianos containing dead and rotting donkeys and live priests - buñuel had a fascination with insects and ants, and this is translated into a scene where a man's hand has a hole in the palm from which ants emerge!

what a surrealistic movie, buñuel & dali had quite a fertile imagination which makes this movie a big classic!

Should men be veiled too?

Veiled-Man

i'm sure you've read this story about 3 guys from emirates who were arrested by members of the religious police for being... too handsome!! yes too handsome was their crime, then they were deported from saudi arabia back to abu dhabi.

since when beauty is a crime? i seriously don't understand this, how racist can this be? isn't that worse than nazism? and for this so-called religious police don't they believe that men and women are the creation of god? people are not responsible for their looks, it is god who created them that way.. so are they punishing god that way for creating beautiful people?

females are already covered head to toe, is it now time for men to get behind the veil too? it seriously beats me...

What’s new at Marina Mall?

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

Gamewizz

game over! gamewizz finally gave up and closed down permanently - we have no clue why, we can only assume that slow business is behind the closure - april 1st was the d-day for gmewizz, however, and according to the guys at x-cite, the owners might be turning this into a new concept.

Snog

on the other hand, snog has deserted the corner under second cup and with gamewizz closure this entire area has gone dead! wonder who's gonna fill in the space, but marina mall is quite active in this area, if they can populate the ceilings with promotional booths they won't even hesitate!

Meet the retweet criminal!

profile-of-a-twitter-user

i came across a story in the paper yesterday about tweeps & law - it seems that anyone who reposts a tweet posted by someone convicted of a crime through the final ruling of the court of cassation is considered an accomplice.

so be very careful what you tweet and most importantly do not repost statements deemed offensive to others in order to avoid legal problems - guess we need to add a new profile to the above exhibit, the retweet criminal :)

Love facebook inline commenting system

facebook-inline-commenting-system

if you have more than 10,000 facebook fans, have a business or brand page, then you should already be aware of the new inline comment system that facebook rolled out recently - we simply love it! it took us a while to adjust in the beginning, especially that comments with high engagement friends or high comments/likes now come on top, but at least you can reply to each comment with a thread conversation.

this is interesting for business pages as it they benefit from identifying their most engaged fans as they come on top while having a focused one on one communication.

inline commenting system will be rolled out to the public in july, so guys be ready for a positive change on facebook! my question is: why didn't they think of that in the first place?

you can read more on this subject here.

Meet awesome Ben’s Cookies

Bens-cookies

what does charlie and the chocolate factory have in common with ben's cookies? the answer is a bit of a stretch, but here it is - it's quentin blake, the illustrator of the book also created ben's logo - but that's not the only thing that makes the place so awesome, it's the unbelievably freshly cooked cookies! i strongly believe they are the best cookies in town today, so if you're a sucker for cookies, you know where to go!

ben's cookies has been open for a few months at the avenues phase 3, first floor - you can buy their cookies in a box, a tin or by pieces and they come in 14 different flavors.
