The cake curse!

Monday, September 30th, 2013

yes it’s a curse! every time i ask for a themed cake i get into some kind of trouble.. it's my son's birthday, and for his sweet sixteen i wanted to get him a special cake, a surprise one... but little did i know that the actual surprise would be yet another cake saga for that matter.

ryan's friends decided to throw him an early surprise party, and of course they asked for my help -  so mommy started to look for cakes and organize stuff for the event… as i only had 3 days for the surprise dinner, i decided to order a simple cake for the dinner and another themed one for the family gathering - since ryan loves the walking dead, i picked up that theme for his cake, though a bit gory for the occasion.

i went to la baguette to check whether the themed cake can be ready on time for d day, and asked for a small alteration on the simple one - it wasn't a busy day, but there was this couple looking for a cake, which for some odd reason had me waiting for more than 45 minutes! once the indecisive and unbelievably slow couple finally placed their order, came my turn - so i showed the girl my cakes designs and gave her the jpeg files to email the chef - she promised to call me the next day at 10:00am..

the next day, i waited for the call, but came 10:00 am and no one called! 11:00 am was a carbon copy of 10:00 am, a big fat nothing! at 11:45 i’ve had it, so i decided to pay the bakery a visit and deal with the matter face to face.

as soon as i walked in i spotted the lady and without introductions i inquired about the delay, to which she simply answered oooooooh madam… i loooosst youuur nummmmberrrrr!! hmmm ok stay calm i said to myself… so you lost my number even though you wrote it down in font of me... how unlucky!

fine, so did u talk to the chef i said? yes she goes, but they refused to make the simple cake, but agreed to the themed one.. who is they? there was no clear answer so i asked to talk to the manager and check what was the problem is.

the lady calls abdel aziz, the egyptian manager then started talking to some guy called nasser... from the conversation, you could clearly tell that it was a deaf talk so i asked to talk to the manager in person.

i tried to reason with the guy and asked him about the problem at hand, but he simply refused to make the cake - i explained how simple it was, a few layers of kitkat with strawberries toppings, that's all i need! but the bas***d said, if it were so simple why don’t you make it yourself? his tone of voice was so sarcastic i could have strangled him if he were anywhere near my sight!!

i raised my voice and told him that if i were a chef and had a bakery i would have baked it myself and avoided the hassle!! and besides, i am paying you to bake the cake for me!! the guy held his position, and raised the stakes by informing me that they didn’t even e-mail the designs to the chef - mind you, that they had accepted the themed cake already and refused the simple one, based on what i don't know, maybe by talking to the ghost chef??

after getting really angry i told the manager from hell that i wasn’t a satisfied customer (as if he cared) and that this is not the first time they make such mistakes… now here comes the cream on top, instead of being polite and apologize, this guy tells me to go seek other bakeries in town… there are plenty you know!!! can you believe that?

i’m so stupid to believe that la baguette had good professional staff, actually, when i had a problem with sable a couple of years ago, they placed a comment inviting e to try their service! they sure are much worse! (see above picture)

how did this end? i went to cake & bake and had all what i was asking for - the cake was amazing and exactly what i had in mind, that simple! the staff were so nice and pleasant, very helpful too.. there was a little delay with the delivery but all went well after all and the surprise was a success! as for the themed cake, it has just been delivered :) i got it from bread talk, where there too i met the most professional and helpful people, the walking dead cake looks awesome!!!!

as for la baguette, my advice is to fire your unfriendly, unprofessional staff as they seem not to care about loosing their customers - but to be fair, your manager was right about one thing, and i have to give him credit for that.. there are so many bakeries out there, and boy their service level is so much better... keep it up boys!

Pizzeria Amami, simply the best!

Sunday, September 29th, 2013

there was an awesome pizzeria restaurant next to our house called pizzeria romana, which seems to have disappeared, however a new replacement is in, called pizzeria amami - i went to check it out the other day, and what a wonderful surprise that was!

the interior design hasn't changed, it is still the same as pizzeria romana, however the songs are all italian, and the tv is set to an italian channel - moreover, the waitresses are italians, the chefs are italian, and all the customers are all italians!

the waitress recommended an awesome entry called melenzane parmigiana, fried aubergines with cheese and tomato sauce, it was heavenly! as for the pizza, it was the best i have had in kuwait! i ordered the capricciosa, everything about it is fresh, and the dough is amazing, even the vegetable oil..

one thing needs serious work is their menu - it is very poor, but to hell with it with such amazing food - if you want the real authentic italian pizza, there is one place and one place only, pizzeria amami (amami means i love).

pizzeria amami is in salmiya, salem almubarak street, behind olympia mall, however they will be moving to the symphony mall in november - you can check their facebook page here.

Childhood dreams never fade away..

Thursday, September 26th, 2013

when i'm all grown up, come what may, i'll build a boat to carry me away, i'll hang over the edge and watch the bow of the boat slice through the waves...

beautiful childhood dreams never fade away, they may feel like an optical illusion or a mirage, but somehow, somewhere, some day, the gates of luck will swing wide open and you suddenly hear the sailors cry, smell the sea and feel the sky - tomorrow someone will live that childhood dream for real, when nbk announces the winner of the azimut yacht cards promotion.

the winds of luck might blow your way, so be at the grand avenues tomorrow at 4:00 pm and be ready to set sail - remember, you can't control the wind, but you can always adjust the sail.

all the best to the lucky winner.

WTH morning traffic!

Wednesday, September 25th, 2013

usually i get out of home very early in the morning, however i had to pass by school yesterday so i was delayed by almost an hour and a half - it was still 8 in the morning when i reached gulf road and got stuck under the marina bridge for 25 minutes!! yep, 25 minutes wasted on that signal alone, not sure why this area is so jammed!

what makes you wonder is that the very next signal is relatively easy, after that it is smooth sailing till kuwait city - bit strange this signal, i hate it.

Gulf Road proposal!!

Tuesday, September 24th, 2013

i read this weird story on arabtimesonline entitled "will you marry me?" and frankly the title triggered my curiosity - however the story is far from being romantic, it seeps that a guy was stalking a woman on gulf road, so he followed her and kept bumping into her car to stop (a total of 5 hits), while shouting "will you marry me?" - the lady doesn't know the man, he simply decided to propose his own way, or the highway... excuse the pun!

Where’s my tooth fairy?

Monday, September 23rd, 2013

what i was trying to avoid for such a long time finally happened, i had to pull out my bloody tooth! to make things even worse, the tooth broke and the dentist had to pull each root out separately... not only the luck fairy was absent, but the absence of the tooth fairy makes things even worse! it's as if there's no light at the end of the tunnel, no pay at the end of the month... so frustrating!

Bloody toothaches!

Sunday, September 22nd, 2013

it's been almost a month or two since i'm having a severe toothache, but it is not constant so i kinda managed without seeing a doctor - yesterday, the shit hit the fan as boiling spanish rice landed on my aching tooth and the floodgate of pain swung wide open!

it's silly how a tooth can make your life miserable... suddenly you can't eat, drink, speak, read or sleep for that matter! what makes this dramatic is that my doctor is not available on saturday, so i have to suck it up for 24 hours until i can visit him.

root canal treatment is what i have tried to avoid, but it seems to be inevitable! i hate dentists.

Like IKEA’s new restaurant look?

Thursday, September 19th, 2013

though ikea changed their restaurant's interior design back in ramadan, we just discovered the new look last weekend and had some mixed feelings about it - the wooden tables are much more comfortable and their height are better, now you don't have to bend forward while eating, they just fit perfectly.

the kids corner is still there, however it has been moved a bit further behind the restaurant - we did not try the white plastic tables, we actually didn't like them!

what is great is the lcd screens menus - they really look awesome and bring the food to light perfectly, easy to read with refreshing color combination.

the entrance to ikea is a bit more confined and the whole place looks a bit smaller, we liked how open the restaurant was before, but i guess we'll get used to it.

so mixed feelings about the new look, what's important is that the food is still as good as ever and their meatballs still rock!

Good luck Bennett, you need it!

Wednesday, September 18th, 2013

a friend sent me this picture taken at arraya - it seems that burberry has finally dropped the towel and deserted the mall - l.k. bennett, the leading british brand for shoes, handbags and accessories will replace the previous luxury fashion house - not sure how long this one will last, that mall is rarely busy.. anyway, good luck to bennett.

Yet another price list!

Tuesday, September 17th, 2013

a year ago, september 27th to be precise, we wrote a story on the prices of drugs in kuwait as published in alqabas - the post was entitled getting high reaching new lows - today, and almost to the day, we spotted in alqabas yet another price list, as shown above - some of the terminologies, if not most of them are new to us, like what is strawberries?? they come from egypt and it seems they come with the lowest prices, maybe it's the revolution?

what is surprising is that the goods entry points are no secret to anyone, so how are they getting in poses more than a question mark..

what is more intriguing though is the timing of the two stories in alqabas, do you think that mid-september is the official price-list distribution for drugs in kuwait?

Earth is my home..

Monday, September 16th, 2013

i read in alqabas a few days ago that a number of kuwaitis are ready to go on a one way trip to mars and live there forever! i wonder why would someone take such a deal? imagine living in a place where you practically know nothing, where there are no roads, no mountains, hospitals, rivers, seas, forests, clubs, schools, malls or even cars... the list is too long to even continue..

what about security and crime.. i mean which law will govern and who will enforce it? i will never ever consider such a trip or even consider leaving planet earth - earth is my home forever, not sure what drives people to accept leaving it..

Meet Cinnabon On The Go

Sunday, September 15th, 2013

i was in salmiya so stopped by cinnabon for coffee - i spotted these awesome "on the go" bites that come in small pieces - what i loved about the on the go is the size of the bites, they are tiny and not so messy, very practical to consume - if you love cinnabon do try them out over coffee, they're like little pieces of heaven :)
