No sauce for you!

Sunday, July 8th, 2012

a few days ago, i went with a bunch of friends to the relais de l'entrecôte at alfanar, we ordered dinner and waited for the food - first came the salads, then the drinks - one of the guys preferred to have his coke with the meat, as a result 8 men were punished as we all sat watching the coke bottles chilling on the table for over 15 minutes (despite several attempts to convince the waitresses that our friend spoke for himself)

nevertheless, we waited for the meat to land, and everyone had his share of steak and fries - right before the second serving, that same friend who delayed the opening of the coke bottles, orders an extra basket of bread, he likes to dip the bread in the steak sauce - second serving was over, the meat gone, the bread ready for the dip, but we had no more sauce in our plates, so we asked the waitresses for extra sauce, but the answer came down very rudely "no extra sauce".

we tried to ask why gently, but the answer was negative, we don't give extra sauce! we argued back saying we only need a small quantity for the dip, but the waitress did not budge - we asked for our tray back, she said it is gone to the kitchen, we asked for any other tray for that matter but they refused.

we waited for a couple of minutes and asked another waitress, but she sounded exactly like her friend, no extra sauce! extra sauce is not on the menu, we're afraid that people might copy the recipe!! no extra sauce, bla bla bla... but the best excuse was yet to come, it was about the sauce shipment that has been delayed, and poor chef is really trying hard to make the best of what he has.. bottom line "no sauce for you"!!

it really felt as if we're in this seinfeld episode called "soup nazi", have you seen it? no soup for you!!

What next?

don't you think that malls have become littered with advertising space? marina mall has a kiosk between every other kiosk, the avenues has perfume stalkers stands like every 4 meters, then you've got danglers hanging from the ceilings, banners stuck on walls, floor stickers, pillar stickers, promoters, walking balloons, elevator banners, bathroom stickers and parking megas... everywhere you go there is an advertising space awaiting for you, you feel as if advertisers are hunting you down!

as for the latest idea, a stand that offers sanitizer foam from one end and a digital advertising space from the other! i spotted frankenstein's creation at alfanar mall the other day and it cracked me up!

seriously now, how far will people go to bombard you with promotions and offers?? i mean what next? elevator ceilings banners?? you know most people walk into the elevators and in order to avoid strangers they look up the ceiling, this would be the ultimate opportunity to catch someone when he has nothing else to do - it will be ideal for religious messages, you can draw a sky, put some clouds and sell a ticket to heaven, and with the right elevator music, it will be the ideal sight & sound experience.. how about that??!!

My favorite spot at Al-Fanar Mall

Friday, July 8th, 2011

the best thing about al-fanar mall is that small garden in underground level - it's been a while since i've been there, i just love these birds, they bring nature in to a dry place quite nicely.

Sporadic news from Salem Almubarak Street

Monday, April 4th, 2011

i was walking down salem almubarak street visiting a few malls and noticed the following:

1- bath & body works replaces next at alfanar mall.

2- alrifai has closed down its shop right across alfanar mall - it has been a while since the closure and despite its strategic location, the shop is still vacant until today.

further down the street in layla galleria a new coffee shop has opened, café del mar - it's a family owned coffee shop run by a mother and her kids, cute idea..

my last stop was at AG Mart, a schizophrenic supermarket with quite a disconnect between the exterior, interior architecture and the brand name / logo - they're trying to look upscale but my guess they failed miserably - the veggies look awesome though :)

so that's about my quick salem almubarak street updates - too bad it feels a bit laid-back nowadays, i loved that street when it was buzzing with life - i guess that its fame faded with the opening of the new mega malls - remember when that street ended with a u-turn, just before the tunnel? there was no traffic light at that end of the street which created even more buzz during weekends - nevertheless, i'm still a big fan of salem almubarak street and its cafés...

what's hot: la vie en rose, or rosy life seems to be a cool upscale lingerie shop

what's not: can't make up their minds on the shop's arabic name - the 360 shop and the fanar shop have 2 different translations!!

Lacoste's RED! collection targeting  the younger and fashion-alert customers is truly stunning!. The range features a tweaked crocodile label and offers a  stunning color world, slimmer cut- mod, clean and fitted. The new segment has the crocodile leading the letters and punctuated with a red exclamation point. Lacoste or benetton? perhaps a question mark would be more appropriate than an exclamation mark, nevertheless the collection is fantastic check it out.
