How about human trafficking instead of road traffic?

Meshael Alayban

i read this story about meshael alayban, a member of the saudi royal family and one of six wives of saudi prince abdulrahman bin nasser bin abdulaziz al saud, who is being charged with human trafficking - according to prosecutors she held a domestic servant against her will by taking her passport and locking it up in a safe deposit box, forcing the kenyan woman to work extremely long hours for about $220 a month.

this modern-day slavery is a common scenario in our region, arabs often forget when they travel abroad that a human being has basic rights and that everyone is equal before the law - i wonder whether enforcing road traffic laws should take priority over human trafficking, especially that kuwait is no stranger to such foul behavior, not that we're against enforcing any laws, but i think that human trafficking should come first.

Should men be veiled too?

Veiled-Man

i'm sure you've read this story about 3 guys from emirates who were arrested by members of the religious police for being... too handsome!! yes too handsome was their crime, then they were deported from saudi arabia back to abu dhabi.

since when beauty is a crime? i seriously don't understand this, how racist can this be? isn't that worse than nazism? and for this so-called religious police don't they believe that men and women are the creation of god? people are not responsible for their looks, it is god who created them that way.. so are they punishing god that way for creating beautiful people?

females are already covered head to toe, is it now time for men to get behind the veil too? it seriously beats me...

fayhan-al-ghamdi

i am sure you came across this story on news webs, i tried to forget it but i couldn't.. it made me so angry i decided to write about it and vent my anger and frustration..

this father & preacher's crimes and sins are so sick i don't even know where to start... first he accused his kid of not being a virgin and took her to a doctor for virginity inspection! excuse me!! a 5-year-old?? imagine the trauma she went through because of her sick father - then, probably after making sure she was a virgin, he rapes her in every possible and imaginary way, breaking her back and tearing her rectum apart - then, after realizing that she was bleeding beyond repair he tries to burn her rectum in an attempt to close it!  but that was not enough, he beat her to death, crushing her skull and breaking her ribs!!

what kind of animals that person is? is he really a preacher or the devils' representative on earth? how can he talk about god when he is capable of such atrocities to an innocent soul?? but that doesn't end here... it seems that the saudi authorities have a different take on this, they just released the monster out of prison after serving just a few months and paying blood money.

i am speechless, my prayers go to that poor angel, i am sure she is in heaven and hope she never sees her father again! for more on this you can read the full story here.

Saudi Benjamin Button??

saudi-wives

i read this tragic story on mailonline about this 90-year-old saudi man who paid $17,000 as dowry for some irresponsible parents to wed their 15-year-old daughter! yes, 90 VS 15!!

this story reminded me of benjamin button.. imagine that when the girl was born the guy was 75!! they probably have learned the same things at the same time, like trying to stay clean, eat properly, speak clearly, walk carefully, count their teeth.. a bit like benjamin and daisy when they were kids..

the poor girl barricaded herself in a room and escaped the very night of her wedding and grandpa is sewing suing the parents to get his dowry back!

is this some kind of a trade? how can her parents accept such a deal? beats me...

22 years of torture!

Thursday, December 6th, 2012

it's been a week full of bad/sad news, so i will take over from my wife and end it on a probably the worst news ever - it's about a woman who has been torturing her husband for 22 years!! yes 22 years of moral torture, not telling him the truth, a simple truth that can put his mind to rest and deliver him from his agony.

this woman could have told her husband the truth he seeks 22 years ago, but noooooo!! she insists on torturing him and enjoys it so much, she even finds pleasure in his misery & sorrow!!!

this woman is my wife! yes my friends.. and i want you, my fellow readers to discover her devious ways... see this salad above? she just won't share with me the recipe which she has kept secret for 22 years!! i tried everything, i tried to be nice, romantic, macho... but in vain - i even tried to be smart, sneaking into the kitchen behind her back but she was always there, alert to my every plan - i even tried to examine her grocery list whenever she bought pasta.. but guess what? she never bought the ingredients in one go!

not sure what to do next, i've ran out of ideas, this cannot continue.. i am so frustrated..

anyways, i have put this post under human rights, anyone listening??

Finally! UN calls for ban on female circumcision

Thursday, November 29th, 2012

when we were in egypt back in 2003, some friends told me that they were working with the UN on a project to stop FGC/M (female genital mutilation, circumcision) - i was shocked to hear them saying that the numbers are frightening, like 97% of egyptian women suffered from fgc according to UN reports!

all these years and the situation remains the same... it breaks my heart to see these high numbers in africa, where this horrible, brutal and inhuman practice is still considered as part of tradition..

for those who have no idea what FGM means, you can read here.

as for the FGM consequences, the removal of, or damage to, healthy, normal genital tissue interferes with the natural functioning of the body and causes several immediate and long-term health effects - for example, babies born to women who have undergone female genital mutilation suffer a higher rate of neonatal death; end in stillbirth or spontaneous abortion; and in a further 25%, the newborn has a low birth weight or serious infection, both of which are associated with an increased risk of perinatal death.

i wonder what took the united nations so long to call for this ban! for more on this you can read here.

A company that respects its values

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012

i read this news about ikea and it made me respect this company even more - after airbrushing women from their saudi catalog, ikea released a statement expressing regrets - it said "we should have reacted and realized that excluding women from the saudi arabian version of the catalog is in conflict with the ikea group values", in this case gender equality.

way to go ikea, this piece of news goes into our human rights archive category - i am interested to know what will happen to next year catalog, will they put women back and respect their values or clash with the local culture?

you can read more on this here.

Whose decision is it?

Wednesday, August 29th, 2012

of all the rape stories, this one is the worst!! we already wrote about the rapist who assaulted 30 boys in jleeb al shyoukh and farwaniya, the rapist who blamed it on black magic and the mother who raped her daughter for sex education - there was also the rape cabbie, and that wicked law in germany about an optional castration for sex criminals.

however, nothing looks as sad as this story i read a couple of days ago on arabtimes, where 2 boys raped an arab girl with this strange "source" saying that one of the rapists will be compelled to marry the victim based on the outcome of forensics or else they serve seven years in prison!!

how can a girl marry the guy who raped her??? this is beyond any logic, and against human right! then i didn't get the part that says "he will be compelled to marry her or go to jail", is it a decision that he, and he only, has to take or is this according to some kind of a law? doesn't the victim have a say in this? it is really appalling!! any lawyer with an answer?

Kissing Dubai goodbye

Friday, June 8th, 2012

i never liked dubai, but that's not why i'm writing about this story - i'm sure you've heard about this girl who was jailed for 23 days then deported to the uk and denied access to dubai forever, for supposedly kissing a guy in public!

people always praise dubai, they like its lifestyle, its high towers and shiny hotels... but all that glitters is not gold and there's a dark side to dubai's glamor..

dubai's glamor lacks law and justice, how can someone prove his innocence there.. the brit claims the kiss never happened, but the woman who saw her with a group of male friends and reported her claims otherwise - my question is, how can you prove that the kiss ever happened? what if the lady was very bad-looking or simply jealous and wanted to get even with destiny..

it is scary to see your life being completely ruined for something so silly..

Evil prick!

Thursday, May 17th, 2012

when is violence against women gonna end? i can't believe what i read everyday in various websites and newspapers! not sure whether the situation is getting worse or with the proliferation of media, every single story is now within reach..

the latest drama is about pakistani guy in britain who kept his 22 year-old daughter-in-law as a sex slave, until she learned enough english to call 999 and ask for help!

what a husband she married!! i forgive your waffle adventure hun ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Such a shame!

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

a friend told me this story that happened a few days ago aboard middle east airlines - it seems that a woman made a big fuss refusing to take her seat because the passenger next to her was an ethiopian helper - what is really sad, is that the captain and the crew agreed to give her another seat!!

i wish i was aboard that flight to tell the captain the tale of the racist passenger - it is said that a racist passenger on a british airways flight from johannesburg objects to being seated next to a black man - she asks for another seat, the flight attendant says the flight is full, but that she'll check - she later returns to say there is one seat in first class and that the captain of the plane has approved a transfer to that seat because he feels that someone should not have to sit next to such an obnoxious person - the flight attendant then turns to the black man and invites him to the first class seat to the cheers and applause of other passengers.

whether true or not, this story gives you the chills! i believe middle east airlines had a golden opportunity to show the world, once again, that people are equal no matter where they come from or look like.

i loved the ending of the british airways article i read, it says "people forget what you said, people forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel"...

such a shame!
